Quick answer
For packaging, paper tubes and cardboard tubes are usually the same thing: a rigid round pack made from wound layers of board. "Cardboard tube" is the more common search term in the UK, while "paper tube" is often used by suppliers to stress that the pack is paper-based and recyclable.
Where the names come from
The tube body is made from paperboard, so both names are accurate. Some people say "paper tube" for thinner, lighter tubes and "cardboard tube" for thicker, rigid ones, but there is no strict rule. When you ask for a quote, the wall thickness and size matter more than the name.
Paper tubes vs postal tubes
Postal tubes are plain, often brown tubes used for posting posters and documents. Retail paper tubes are different: they have a fitted lid, a printed or kraft wrap and are designed to be seen and kept. Big Tubes makes retail packaging tubes, not postal tubes.
Kraft paper tubes
Kraft tubes use natural brown or white kraft paper as the outer wrap. They suit brands that want a natural, minimal look, and can still carry one or two printed colours. See our kraft cardboard tubes.
