Then choose a diameter, height and tube style, agree the dieline and prepare the printed artwork. This sequence avoids the common problem of beautiful artwork being forced onto a pack that does not fit properly.

1. Define the job the pack needs to do

Ask what the tube needs to achieve. Is it a shelf pack, a gifting format, a launch piece, a presentation layer around a bottle, or a pack for a set of smaller products? The answer affects the structure, internal support, print finish and delivery plan.

It also helps to be explicit about what the tube is not. A premium retail tube can add presentation and rigidity, but it is not automatically the complete answer for postal transit. If products will be shipped individually, the outer transit carton and protective packing should be planned as part of the overall system.

2. Measure the finished product

Measure the widest point and full height, including caps, labels, closures and accessories. If more than one product goes into the pack, lay out the actual collection rather than estimating from a product sheet. A physical sample is particularly valuable for bottles, glass vessels and irregular shapes.

3. Pick the style before the artwork is final

There are three core styles:

• Butt joint: a lift-off lid with a short overlap.
• Telescopic: a full-length lid for a more layered reveal.
• Tin lid: a printed tube body with a metal lid, usually tin.

4. Decide what happens inside

The product should feel secure, but not difficult to remove. Depending on the item, that may mean a simple base support, additional clearance, an insert or an arrangement for multiple components. Avoid assuming an internal component will work from a drawing alone; test it with the actual product when possible.

5. Turn the design into production artwork

Once the size and style are confirmed, use the final dieline. Keep important text away from joins and edges. Clearly separate the layers for any foil, emboss, deboss or spot UV. Specify Pantone references where a brand colour needs a defined match, and use CMYK where the design calls for full-colour imagery or gradients.

6. Build enough time into the plan

Production timing depends on the final specification, quantity, artwork readiness and delivery requirements. The most reliable way to plan is to work backwards from the required in-hand date, leaving room for product fitting, dieline approval and artwork proofing.
