Start with clearance

Clearance is the space between the product and the tube. Too little makes removal difficult; too much allows movement and can make the pack feel cheap. Measure the real product, including cap, label, protective wrap and any internal pack.

For irregular products, a simple photograph and a measured sketch are often more helpful than a single diameter. For gift sets, measure the complete arrangement and decide whether a divider or shaped base is needed.

Common insert approaches

• card or board base to stop a product dropping into the tube
• shaped support for a bottle or jar
• divider for two or more items
• sleeve or wrap to prevent scuffing
• presentation card that also tells the product story

The insert should be proportionate to the pack. A heavy bottle needs a more considered support strategy than a lightweight pouch.

Match the insert to the tube style

Butt joint tubes give a compact opening, so the insert should not make removal awkward. Telescopic tubes have more visible reveal and can use an insert as part of the unboxing sequence. Tin-lid formats should be checked for the interaction between the metal lid, product height and any top clearance.

Do not confuse presentation and transit protection

A printed tube can present the product beautifully but may still need an outer shipping carton or additional protection for courier handling. Decide what the tube is responsible for, then design the complete pack around that responsibility.
